Boeing Secures 737 MAX Certifications Amid Record Backlog

Boeing reached a significant milestone in its commercial recovery this quarter with the official FAA certification of the 737-7 and 737-10 MAX variants. These approvals provide a clearer path forward for the manufacturer, which is currently targeting a steady production rate of 47 aircraft per month for the 737 program.

Despite these certifications, the commercial division continues to navigate financial headwinds. The unit reported an operating loss of $697 million for the third quarter of 2026, citing rising supply chain costs and production adjustments. However, overall company performance remains buoyed by a record $745 billion backlog, which includes strong contributions from the defense and services sectors.

The defense division specifically received a boost following the U.S. Navy selection of Boeing to develop the F/A-XX fighter. While the commercial airplanes unit is still working toward sustained profitability, leadership noted that the certification of the remaining MAX variants and the ongoing progress of the 777X program are essential components of the company’s broader operational recovery strategy as it enters the final months of the year.
