US Questions Airbus Loan Terms as Trade Truce Faces Pressure

The United States government has issued a formal warning regarding a $3.4 billion financing package provided to Airbus by the European Investment Bank. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated that the lack of transparency surrounding the deal threatens the stability of the transatlantic aircraft trade truce established in 2021.

The dispute centers on whether the EIB funding provides Airbus with an unfair competitive advantage over US manufacturers like Boeing. Under the existing agreement, both the US and the EU committed to ensuring that all financing for commercial aircraft development is conducted on market terms. Washington officials maintain that they have requested specific details on the loan repeatedly without receiving a sufficient response.

Airbus has defended the financing as a standard commercial facility consistent with previous arrangements. The manufacturer stated it remains willing to cooperate with government authorities to clarify the nature of the deal. However, the US administration argues that the current lack of information complicates the ongoing tariff suspension. For operators and market watchers, this disagreement highlights the fragility of the current trade environment, as both sides monitor whether research funding remains within the agreed boundaries of fair competition.
