Security Breach at Leipzig/Halle Airport Following Drone Discovery

German officials have launched an investigation into a security breach at Leipzig/Halle Airport following the discovery of a drone equipped with an unknown explosive device. The incident occurred late Tuesday, triggering a significant emergency response and the temporary closure of the airport’s north runway.

An airport employee located the drone near the tarmac. Police technicians deployed an explosives-disposal robot to neutralize the device by removing its detonator. While authorities have not identified a specific target, photos from the scene show the recovery operation taking place near a parked Antonov cargo aircraft. Additionally, reports indicate a freight aircraft sustained minor damage after colliding with an unidentified object following a diverted flight path.

The investigation is currently being led by state prosecutors in Saxony who specialize in extremist and politically motivated crimes. Operations at the logistics hub returned to normal on Wednesday morning. This event highlights the ongoing challenges airport operators face regarding perimeter security and the potential threat posed by small, unauthorized unmanned aerial vehicles near critical aviation infrastructure.
