Lockheed Martin Skunk Works and the U.S. Air Force have reached a significant milestone in autonomous flight testing. During an eight-sortie campaign at Edwards Air Force Base, an AI agent piloted the X-62 VISTA through 27 live target intercepts. This development marks a transition from relying on simulated data to utilizing real-time, onboard sensor feeds.
The test aircraft, a modified F-16, utilized a Legion Pod to track a T-38 target. By processing infrared data through an onboard AI agent, the aircraft successfully maneuvered into tactical positions. This approach aims to mirror the complexities of operational environments where pilots must close the sensor-to-action loop without relying on external data injections.
Lockheed Martin credits its “Supermassive” agent generation capability for enabling the rapid integration of these systems within a three-month window. The X-62 VISTA continues to serve as a primary testbed for autonomous research, recently undergoing mission systems upgrades to enhance sensor integration. These flight tests provide critical data for broader Pentagon efforts, including the development of Collaborative Combat Aircraft and the VENOM program, as the industry moves closer to fielding autonomous tactical platforms.
