US Air Force Pilots Begin Operational Testing of B-21 Raider

The United States Air Force has confirmed that an operational pilot recently flew the Northrop Grumman B-21 Raider, marking a significant milestone in the bomber’s evaluation timeline. The sortie, conducted at Edwards Air Force Base, involved an operational test pilot sharing the cockpit with a developmental test pilot.

This dual-pilot approach signals a departure from traditional procurement cycles. Typically, developmental flight tests focus on technical specifications, while operational evaluations occur much later. By transitioning into a combined environment, the Air Force aims to evaluate the aircraft’s combat utility alongside its basic flight characteristics.

Officials stated that this integration allows the program to bridge the gap between initial performance checks and mission readiness. The presence of operational personnel early in the process is designed to provide immediate feedback on the bomber’s capabilities. This shift in the flight test pipeline reflects an effort to streamline the acquisition and fielding of the next-generation platform. The move is intended to ensure the Raider meets combat-effective standards as the program progresses through weapon integration and mission systems testing.
