ZeroAvia Founder Val Miftakhov Steps Down Amid Strategic Realignment

Val Miftakhov, the founder of hydrogen-electric propulsion developer ZeroAvia, has stepped down from his position as CEO. The transition became effective May 26, 2026, though Miftakhov will maintain his seat on the company Board of Directors.

Christine Ourmieres-Widener, the current Executive Chair, has assumed the role of interim CEO. Ourmieres-Widener brings extensive airline industry experience, including past leadership roles at TAP Air Portugal and Flybe, to the startup as it searches for a permanent successor.

The management change follows a period of organizational restructuring for the company, which recently implemented a significant reduction in its workforce. While ZeroAvia has advanced flight testing for its ZA600 powertrain, the startup has faced recurring delays regarding its commercial certification timelines. Current projections aim for certification of the fuel cell system by 2027, with the full powertrain expected to follow several years later.

As the hydrogen propulsion sector faces increased pressure to prove commercial viability, industry watchers are monitoring whether this leadership shift will alter the company technical roadmap. ZeroAvia continues to develop its more powerful ZA2000 system alongside its primary regional aircraft initiatives.
