The UK Airprox Board (UKAB) has published its findings regarding a reported close encounter between an Airbus A321 and several gliders near London Luton Airport. The incident, which occurred this past April, prompted an investigation after a commercial pilot reported multiple gliders operating at an altitude of 5,000ft while on approach.
Air traffic control personnel expressed concern regarding the operational proximity of gliders from the London Gliding Club to active commercial flight paths. Controllers noted that the lack of transponders or radio communication on some recreational aircraft can complicate airspace deconfliction in busy corridors.
The investigation clarified that three gliders were present, rather than the four originally reported. While the commercial pilot expressed concern regarding the proximity of a Schleicher ASK21, the UKAB concluded that standard safety margins were maintained throughout the encounter. Investigators determined there was no actual risk of collision during the event.
