A Hellenic Air Force F-16 fighter jet successfully completed an emergency belly landing at Zakynthos International Airport (ZTH) on July 9, 2026. The aircraft, assigned to the 335 Squadron of the 116 Combat Wing, suffered a landing gear malfunction during a routine training flight.
To mitigate the risks of the gearless touchdown, ground crews at the airport applied a layer of fire-suppressant foam along the runway surface. While the aircraft caught fire upon contact with the tarmac, emergency response teams quickly contained the blaze. The pilot exited the jet without injury.
The Hellenic Air Force General Staff confirmed that an investigation into the mechanical failure is currently underway. The aircraft had originated from Araxos Air Base prior to the diversion.
Operational activity at Zakynthos Airport remains suspended as the wreckage is removed. This incident creates a significant impact on airport operations during the peak summer travel season. The F-16 remains the primary combat platform for the Hellenic Air Force, and the service is currently assessing the status of the affected airframe.
