Farnborough 2026: Shift Toward Autonomous and Electric Hardware

The 2026 Farnborough International Airshow opens this week, signaling a distinct shift in aerospace development. While previous years focused on high-level concepts, this edition prioritizes hardware-validated progress across the sectors of autonomy, electrification, and defense.

A primary highlight includes the first dual-aircraft electric air mobility flying display, featuring the BETA Technologies CX300 and Vertical Aerospace’s VA-1X. This milestone underscores the move toward functional electric flight in commercial service. Simultaneously, Boeing will debut its MQ-28 Ghost Bat, marking the first time the uncrewed platform appears at the show in static form. The aircraft has recently completed significant trials, including live missile testing.

Defense interests are also centered on the Global Combat Air Programme. Following a substantial design and engineering contract awarded in early July, the project is moving forward as a primary export-available sixth-generation fighter. With the aerospace industry navigating ongoing supply chain constraints, these developments offer a view into the technical maturation of major programs. The show continues through July 24 at Farnborough Airport, with trade sessions addressing sustainability, defense, and global supply chain resilience.
