FAA Issues Warning on 3D-Printed Cockpit Parts

The Federal Aviation Administration has released an Unapproved Parts Notification concerning a range of 3D-printed cockpit and interior accessories. The agency identified components sold by Michael Graham, doing business as MadeByMike3D, between May 2024 and August 2025 as unauthorized for use on type-certificated aircraft.

Affected items include yoke grips, cup holders for models such as the Beechcraft Bonanza and Grumman fleet, headset holders, and defroster vent components. While these parts are primarily interior accessories, the FAA mandates that any article produced for sale and installation on type-certificated aircraft must hold a Parts Manufacturer Approval or meet specific regulatory exceptions, such as owner-produced parts criteria.

The agency has instructed maintenance providers and aircraft owners to inspect their inventories. Any identified components should be quarantined to verify their airworthiness status. Although the FAA reported no specific incidents linked to these products, the notification highlights the regulatory friction between accessible desktop manufacturing and established aviation safety standards. Owners are encouraged to review the official FAA notification to ensure compliance with current installation requirements.
