The Catalina Aircraft Trust has reached a significant milestone in its effort to revive the iconic PBY Catalina. The Florida-based organization recently secured a letter of intent from Pan American Airways System, a Hong Kong-based startup, for the acquisition of up to 46 modernized Catalina II amphibious aircraft.
The project seeks to leverage the original 1930s airframe design while integrating modern turboprop powerplants and updated avionics. By utilizing the existing type certification as a baseline, the trust aims to streamline the regulatory approval process compared to a clean-sheet development program. The proposed Catalina II is designed for both civil luxury transport and specialized government applications, including search and rescue and maritime patrol.
The developer claims the platform could offer up to 19 hours of endurance and versatile payload capabilities. However, the path to production remains complex. While the trust possesses deep institutional knowledge of the PBY platform, the aircraft remains in the evaluation phase for key systems. The manufacturer currently faces competition from other regional firms proposing advanced amphibious concepts. Industry observers continue to monitor whether this initial commitment will translate into a finalized production line as the company works to navigate the challenges of modern civil certification.
