Animawings Seeks Insolvency, Returns A220 Fleet

Romanian carrier Animawings has entered court-supervised insolvency proceedings as of September 30, 2026. The move marks a significant contraction for the private airline, which recently attempted to transition from a charter-focused operator to a hybrid model with scheduled routes.

As part of its financial restructuring, the airline is disposing of its entire fleet of six Airbus A220-300 aircraft, which have been under lease since 2024. The operator plans to retain only two Airbus A320 aircraft to maintain a reduced level of service. Management cited recurring technical difficulties with the A220s as a primary driver for the fleet reduction.

The insolvency filing follows reports of mounting pressure from creditors, including various airports in Romania and Greece. While the airline intends to continue operations during this period, the reduction in fleet size is expected to result in widespread flight cancellations and the discontinuation of several routes. This development highlights the ongoing challenges faced by smaller carriers attempting rapid growth in the current regional market.
