Anak Krakatau Eruption Disrupts Indonesian Airspace


Flight operations at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport remain suspended following the eruption of the Anak Krakatau volcano. With ash plumes reportedly reaching altitudes of 50,000 feet, aviation authorities have moved to close airspace to mitigate the severe risks posed by volcanic particulate to turbine engines.

For operators, the primary concern remains the ingestion of microscopic volcanic glass, which can melt within high-pressure turbine sections and cause catastrophic flameouts or cooling system blockages. Regional air traffic management teams are currently relying on satellite imagery from the Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre to track plume dispersion and determine safe flight corridors.

The suspension has affected over 22,000 passengers, with significant pressure on fleet scheduling and crew duty times as airlines manage widespread aircraft groundings. Indonesian transport officials report that they are coordinating with meteorology agencies to assess conditions. As of mid-afternoon, there is no set timeline for the full resumption of traffic. Operators are advised to monitor NOTAMs closely, as authorities are exploring weather modification efforts, including cloud seeding, to accelerate the clearance of ash from the local environment.
