Air Astana Begins Flight Testing for Boeing 787-9

Air Astana has reached a significant milestone in its fleet modernization program with the commencement of flight testing for its first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. The aircraft, registered EI-KZA, performed its inaugural test flight on October 1, 2026, at the Boeing manufacturing facility in Charleston, South Carolina.

This delivery represents the first of three 787-9 units currently on order for the Kazakh flag carrier. The airline expects the new wide-body jets to enter commercial service in 2027. This transition is part of a broader strategic move to phase out the carrier’s aging Boeing 767-300ER fleet.

The introduction of the 787-9 platform is intended to improve operational efficiency across the airline’s long-haul network. By leveraging the updated fuel efficiency and performance capabilities of the Dreamliner, Air Astana aims to support its international expansion plans while enhancing the passenger experience. While the airline has not yet finalized its specific route deployments or cabin configurations for the new aircraft, the current flight testing phase confirms the carrier remains on schedule for its 2027 entry into service.
