Biman Bangladesh Airlines has officially firmed up an order for 10 Airbus aircraft, consisting of four A350-900s and six A321neos. This latest agreement follows closely on the heels of a separate deal for 25 Boeing jets, including 737 MAX and 787 Dreamliner variants.
The addition of Airbus narrowbody and widebody types marks a significant shift toward a more mixed fleet. Leadership at the carrier stated that the new equipment will be utilized to improve operating economics and range. The airline explicitly noted that these assets are intended to support expansion into North America, Europe, and the Middle East.
Industry observers are noting the complexity of the carrier’s future maintenance and training requirements as it integrates multiple new aircraft platforms. While the airline has clear ambitions for transatlantic service, current regulatory hurdles remain. Bangladesh does not currently hold a Category 1 rating from the FAA, which prevents local carriers from initiating routes to the United States. Until this safety designation is resolved, the airline’s planned expansion to North America will remain on hold despite the incoming long-range fleet.
