NTSB Probes Cockpit Dynamics in Fatal Amazon Cargo Jet Crash

The National Transportation Safety Board is currently reviewing flight data and cockpit recordings following the fatal Amazon cargo jet crash at Miami International Airport earlier this week. The Boeing 767, operated by 21 Air, overran the runway, resulting in five fatalities on the ground. Preliminary information suggests the aircraft touched down in an unstable state, failing to utilize thrust reversers during the landing sequence.

Cockpit Analysis and Go-Around Failures

NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy confirmed investigators are prioritizing interviews with the flight crew to understand the final moments before the excursion. Data indicates the aircraft may have initiated a late attempt to perform a go-around before abandoning the maneuver. Aviation observers note that the decision to continue the approach rather than executing a timely go-around may have been a critical factor.

Investigations are also examining the impact of prevailing weather conditions, including potential tailwinds, on the landing. Additionally, the NTSB is reviewing the absence of Engineered Materials Arresting Systems at the airport, which are designed to safely decelerate aircraft during runway overruns. Formal findings from the investigation are expected to be finalized in the coming months.
