Aviation Authorities Investigate Fatal Sifnos Helicopter Crash

A formal aviation safety investigation is underway following a fatal helicopter accident on the Greek island of Sifnos. The incident occurred on Monday, involving a private aircraft traveling from Markopoulo to Sifnos.

Reports indicate the aircraft was approaching its scheduled landing at a local heliport around 6:15 p.m. local time when contact was lost. Witnesses in the Tholos area reported unusual engine sounds shortly before the helicopter descended and caught fire near the intended landing site. The pilot and two passengers were confirmed deceased at the scene.

Greek aviation officials have initiated a comprehensive review of the event. The investigative process includes an analysis of flight records and the aircraft’s maintenance logs. Authorities are also evaluating potential technical malfunctions and prevailing weather conditions at the time of the flight. The pilot was identified as a former Hellenic Army veteran with significant flight experience, adding a technical focus to the inquiry as investigators work to determine the specific sequence of events leading to the loss of the aircraft.
