Archer Aviation has entered the military aerospace sector with the debut of Thunder, a hybrid-electric, Group 5 autonomous vertical takeoff and landing aircraft. Developed in partnership with defense technology firm Anduril, the platform was showcased at the Farnborough International Airshow.
Thunder represents a departure from Archer’s purely electric air taxi designs. The aircraft utilizes a series hybrid powertrain to achieve extended range while maintaining flight precision. According to the developers, the platform integrates Anduril’s Lattice software to enable autonomous mission capabilities. This technology is intended to support operations including cargo logistics, remote area supply, and strike missions.
While the initial reveal highlights a defense-oriented variant, the companies indicated that the airframe is designed for both military and commercial utility. Industry observers note that the shift toward hybrid systems and defense partnerships reflects a broader strategic pivot within the electric aviation sector, as manufacturers seek to diversify revenue streams before full-scale commercial passenger operations reach regulatory maturity.
