Archer Aviation Advances FAA Type Certification

Archer Aviation has reached a notable milestone in the evolving eVTOL sector, becoming the first company to complete Phase 3 of the FAA type certification process. This progress moves the firm into Phase 4, which requires the Midnight aircraft to undergo formal testing and analysis to satisfy federal airworthiness standards.

Following the announcement, company shares saw a 7.1% increase, closing at $6.81 last week. This momentum comes as the firm balances rising research and development expenditures, which increased by 65.6% during the first quarter. While the company reported a net loss of $217.7 million, it maintains a cash and investment position of approximately $1.7 billion.

The competitive landscape remains active as peers like Joby Aviation and Eve Holding advance their own programs. Joby is currently preparing for type inspection authorization, while Eve continues to focus on long-term development. Archer plans to initiate U.S. service later this year under the White House eIPP framework. Analysts are now monitoring whether these regulatory gains can successfully offset concerns regarding long-term cash burn and the challenges of scaling infrastructure for future operations.
