UK Progresses Apache Loyal Wingman Drone Program

The UK Ministry of Defence has reached a new stage in its efforts to integrate uncrewed air systems (UAS) with its fleet of Apache attack helicopters. As part of Project NYX, the government has shortlisted BAE Systems, Anduril Industries, Tekever, and Thales UK to further develop autonomous wingman concepts.

The program aims to enhance the operational capability of rotary-wing assets by deploying autonomous systems for reconnaissance, target acquisition, and electronic warfare. By offloading these high-risk tasks to uncrewed platforms, the Ministry of Defence intends to improve situational awareness for aircrews in contested environments. The current framework emphasizes that while these systems will function autonomously, weapon deployment decisions remain strictly under human control.

Technological integration remains a primary focus, requiring seamless communication between the Apache and its uncrewed counterparts without placing an undue burden on the pilot. The Ministry of Defence has allocated £10 million to support the initial development phase. Officials expect to narrow the current list of four candidates to two finalists later this year, with the objective of fielding an operational prototype by 2030.
