Air India Flights Extended by One Hour Due to Closure of Pakistani Airspace

Pakistan has announced the immediate closure of its airspace to all Indian-registered and Indian-operated airlines. This decision follows India’s recent measures to downgrade relations with Pakistan after a terrorist attack in Kashmir that killed 26 people, marking one of the deadliest assaults on civilians in nearly two decades.

The airspace closure has significant implications for international air travel, especially for flights departing from Delhi and other northern Indian cities. As a result, west-bound flights from India must now reroute over the Arabian Sea, leading to longer travel times and increased operational costs for airlines. Some Air India flights have had to divert to refuel before continuing to Delhi.

Industry experts predict that airfares on affected routes may rise by 8–12% in the short term due to higher fuel consumption and potential payload restrictions. Air India has acknowledged the situation, stating, “Due to the announced restriction of Pakistan airspace for all Indian airlines, some Air India flights will take an alternative extended route. We regret the inconvenience caused to our passengers due to this unforeseen airspace closure that is outside our control. The safety of our customers and crew remains our top priority.”

This airspace closure is expected to impact travel plans and costs for many passengers.
